Our smoking cessation service offers two comprehensive programmes involving both ongoing behavioural and pharmacological support.

The service has been developed using Prodigy guidelines and is intended to compliment the existing NHS services provided by many of our pharmacies. 

Many of our pharmacies are also involved in various schemes across the UK in partnership with primary care organisations and the Lloydspharmacy service can be tailored to meet the local needs of primary care organisations.

Anticoagulation service

The rapid rise in demand for anticoagulation (INR) monitoring is placing both primary and secondary care clinics under increasing pressure. The number of patients receiving oral anticoagulation therapy is growing by about 10% each year making it essential to find more capacity to ensure these patients receive the best level of care. 

Managing this additional demand will place a massive strain upon both GP and hospital-based clinics. Devolution of INR clinics to community pharmacy is a practical solution and one which releases valuable resources, allowing GP surgeries and primary care organisations to focus their attention on other areas of patient care. 

Lloydspharmacy have developed a complete INR monitoring and dosage service which has been approved by Anticoagulation Europe. Lloydspharmacy can work with primary care organisations to tailor this service to meet local needs.

The Lloydspharmacy Asthma Medicines Support Service aims to identify those patients who are experiencing difficulties with controlling their asthma. It brings together a short series of questions, the Asthma Control Test (ACT) and the MUR service. This service is currently being provided by all of our pharmacies in England and Wales accredited to deliver MURs.

This service can be further developed locally in partnership with local practices to incorporate a review of asthma management plans.

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment and Lipid Moinitoring

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) remains one of the leading killers in the UK.  This service includes both a targeted screening service for those at risk of developing CVD and a monitoring service for those already prescribed certain lipid-lowering medicines. Appropriate lifestyle advice is offered and referral to the doctor when necessary. This service is currently being commissioned by a number of primary care organisations.

COPD is a huge burden to both the NHS and to industry with COPD being responsible for a total of 24 million sick days for the population aged between 45 and 64 years of age for both men and women. One in eight acute hospital admissions are due to COPD, and it accounts for over one million hospital beds occupied in England at a direct cost of over £500 million pounds for healthcare.

Lloydspharmacy can work with local practices to ensure those who are diagnosed with COPD are utilising their prescribed medicines appropriately. This service could include:

• Dyspnoea score
• Inhaler technique check
• Home visits for those with severe COPD receiving oxygen therapy and who are housebound
• Review of management plan, if applicable

Sexual Health

Community pharmacy is already involved in the delivery of sexual health services, including advice and supply of contraceptives.  Many of our pharmacists also supply Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) on behalf of the NHS.

The extended role of community pharmacy within this arena has also been recognised recently through involvement in the national Chlamydia screening programme. Lloydspharmacy have developed a Chlamydia screening service and can work with primary care organisations to deliver this service across their locality. 

It has been estimated that up to 150 million GP consultations per year are for conditions that patients could treat themselves. Pharmacy-led minor ailment schemes can help to address this issue.

Evidence from existing minor ailment services demonstrates shifts in the minor ailment consultation workload from GP practices to community pharmacy.

Lloydspharmacy offers a comprehensive risk assessment and blood glucose testing service.  This service aims to raise awareness, through effective health promotion, encourage positive adjustments to lifestyle and helps identify people who may have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes. 

Type 2 Diabetes

Early Identification Service

Lloydspharmacy offers a comprehensive risk assessment and blood glucose testing service. This service aims to raise awareness through effective health promotion, encourage positive adjustments to lifestyle and helps identify people who may have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes. 

The service started in Autumn 2002 as a pilot within Glasgow and was rolled out across the whole Lloydspharmacy estate during 2003. We have completed over 1.1 million screenings since the launch in 2003, and approximately 55,000 customers have required referral to their GPs for further investigation and treatment.

The diabetes screening service involves the initial test, counselling and referral to the patient’s GP if necessary. This service is provided in conjunction and with support from Diabetes UK. The service has received widespread recognition and has won the People in Retail Award for Customer Service Initiative in 2006 and the Diabetes UK “Raising Awareness Award” on two occasions.

Management of Type 2 Diabetes

Helping people to understand their condition and the reason their medication has been prescribed is important if maximum benefit is to be gained from treatment. This service can incorporate HbA1C measurement which allows the pharmacist to identify how well blood glucose has been controlled, along with a simple medication review.

Good blood glucose control is important if complications of diabetes are to be avoided. Providing patients with information through the use of new technology, such as mobile phones, allows patients to take better control of their condition. Lloydspharmacy has worked with Oxford University and e-San Ltd to develop to t+ diabetes service. The t+ diabetes service can make it easier for patients to stay confidently in control by helping them to develop a better understanding of what affects their blood glucose levels, providing immediate feedback to the patient’s mobile phone whenever a reading is taken. These services can be tailored to meet local needs.
